The developers used their skills and concept to create an extensive irrigation system with the help of dams and dikes earthworks for rice cultivation. African slaves are known to be the first to present this concept and they helped them to develop this irrigation system.

Magnolia gardens became popular when John Grimke Drayton got the inherited property and started to develop these gardens. The property was inherited to Grimke from Thomas Drayton who gifted the property to Grimke on the condition that he will use the surname of Drayton. Live oak trees and azaleas were the two factors that contributed for the sky touching popularity of these gardens. Mr. Mathew Braday also photographed these gardens and he was then known for his American civil war photography. Moreover, another popular person whom name has been used for Magnolia’s Audubon Swamp Garden was Mr. Jon James Audubon. The gardens were opened for public as a tourist attraction after Civil War by John Drayton to earn some money. These gardens are listed among the first privately owned gardens that were opened to public as tourist attraction along Ashley. In the twentieth century magnolia gardens hosted some great notable personalities like Henry Ford, George Gershwin, Eleanor Roosevelt, Reba McEntire and Orson Welles.
